Advances in photovoltaic solar panels have improved off-grid solar technology while decreasing the cost. Off-grid solar refers to solar systems that are not connected to the electric grid. This allows remote property owners to install solar and enjoy the comforts of electricity. Off-grid solar systems function similarly to their on-grid counterparts:
1. Sunshine on the solar panels generates DC electricity
2. DC electricity charges deep cycle batteries
3. 12 volt appliances run directly off the batteries or solar panels
4. Electricity runs through an inverter which converts it to 120V AC electricity (electricity used by standard home appliances)
The only major difference in the deep cycle batteries. These batteries charge during the day to provide electricity at night.
The same concept is applied to solar emergency backup systems. Click here to learn more about solar emergency backup.
