Florida Power & Light De-Soto Next Generation Solar Energy Center

Barack Obama visited the Florida Power & Light De-Soto Next Generation Solar Energy Center. It is the largest photovoltaic solar center in the nation. The center received $200 million in federal funds form the Recovery Act. $3.4 billion of the Recovery Act went to creating an energy-efficient electricity grid.

The solar center features a 25 MW solar system and pushing Florida to being one of the leading states in photovoltaic development.

With the deployment of photovoltaics in Florida, jobs are being created and global greenhouse gas emissions are being reduced.

The solar array on the De-Soto Next Generation Solar Energy Center uses more than 90,000 photovoltaic solar panels. This is enough to power 3,000 homes. It created more than 400 construction jobs and reduced carbon emissions by 575,000 tons.

Desoto is also building a 75 MW solar-thermal plant to generate electricity by heating up water. Another 10 MW photovoltaic facility will also be built. These plants are creating 1,500 jobs directly while influencing 5,000 more.

FPL is investing $200 million from federal funding and $378 million to create jobs and revolutionize the way Florida produces electricity.
