Solar installations can happen anywhere where the sun is shining. Residents, businesses, municipalities, and others are understanding the benefits solar can bring. Even sports teams are looking at using solar to cut costs and their carbon footprint.
Qwest Field — the home of the Seahawks — announced the installation of 3,750 solar panels on the roof of the Qwest Field Event Center.
The solar installation will consist of glass-rod technology to mount the panels into place in what was a vast and unused roof area to turn it into an innovative energy-supplying system.
Peter McLoughlin, president of the Seahawks, believes that installing the solar system is the right thing for the environment, will the help the team with energy conservation, and will save them money in the long run.
It’s estimated that the utility costs at Qwest will be cut by 21 percent (or $280,000), while also reducing carbon emissions (by 1,346 metric tons) and saving on water (by 1,342,660 gallons). The system will generate 830,000 kWh of electricity annual, which is the equivalent of powering 95 homes in the Seattle area.
In addition to find ways to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly, in 2010 at Qwest Field, 525 tons of waste was recycled.
The solar panels are just the next step.
